The following are the challenges in the Wildlife subsector:
- One of the current major problems is civilians owning arms. The government of conducting a disarmament exercise.
- Lack of laws and weak institutionsto regulate the wildlife sector in the country
- Considerable competition for grazing areas and water, and agriculture is expanding there is encroachment on the savannah land areas for cultivation hence exploiting wildlife habitats.
- Poaching and trafficking are another challenge facing wildlife sector in South Sudan
- Inadequate wildlife conservation agencies
- Lack of effective management to secure wildlife borders and ensure sustainable resource management. Boma and Bandingalo park limits do not adequately protect species’ migration patterns.
- Oil companies are moving into the upper White Nile, logging companies are negotiating contracts to exploit the rich teak forests.
- Lack of competent and experienced human resources to manage the sector.
- Inadequate funds to put in place the necessary infrastructure.
- There is no legislation on wildlife and protected area management
- Government departments suffer from shortages of facilities, materials and skilled personnel.
