In the animal resources sub-sector South Sudan is a region densely populated with livestock mainly cattle and small ruminants. In contrast South Sudan is an importer of livestock products from the neighbouring countries.

With investment in the animal resources sub-sector livestock production could be improved substantially for both the domestic and foreign markets in generating revenue for further investment in the sub-sector to improve living standards.
Livestock provides the main source of livehood for a substantial portion of the population, with the herds (mostly cattle) concentrated primarily in the western parts of Upper Nile and in East Equatoria, Jongel and Bahr El-Ghazal states. Livestock are raised by normads and semi-nomads and are entirely dependent on access to grazing land and watering points. However, the increasing number of sedentary farmers is reducing the amount of grazing land available.
