Geography and Climate of South Sudan

South Sudan is located in North Eastern Africa and is bordered by Sudan in the north, Uganda and Kenya in the south , Ethiopia in the east , Central Africa Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo in the west. South Sudan lies between latitudes 3° and 13°N, and longitudes 24° and 36°E. It is covered in tropical forest, swamps, and grassland. The White Nile, a main tributary of the Nile River passes through the country. The highest point in South Sudan is Kinyeti (3,187 m) located on its far southern border with Uganda. South Sudan is located near the Equator and within the tropics and much of its landscape consists of tropical rainforest, its rich biodiversity includes lush savannas, swamplands and rainforests that are home to many species of wildlife. The climate of South Sudan varies but it is mainly tropical climate characterized by a rainy season of high humidity and large amounts of rainfall followed by a drier season the most rainfall in South Sudan is between the months of April and October and the average yearly total for rainfall is approximately 953 mm. Juba, the capital and largest city in South Sudan, has average yearly high temperature of 34.5˚C and an average yearly low temperature of 21.6˚C. South Sudan’s total area is 644,329 square kilometers with a population estimated between 8.2 and 9.2 million people, with 78 percent of the people living in rural areas.
