Location
The park lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya, about 800km from Nairobi. The semi desert ecosystem was established to protect wildlife and the unique prehistoric and archaeological sites some of which are linked to the origin of man. Sibiloi National Park is 1,570 Km2 and lies at an approximate altitude of 375 meters (1246 feet) above sea level.
Vegetation and Landscape
The landscape of Sibiloi is dry, arid and hot but startlingly beautiful. It offers panoramic views of scenic landscapes set in expansive areas of wilderness. The park contains several different types of habitats, from lake shore with water vegetation to arid, desert-like lava rock terrain; savanna plains to riverine forest. The park is waterless except for the alkaline waters of the lake Turkana.
Wildlife and other attractions
The park harbors a variety of wildlife including common zebra, hippos, crocodile and numerous bird species such as flamingos, Grant’s gazelle, reticulated giraffe, pelicans, beisa oryx, topi, greater kudu, hippo, lion, cheetah, leopard, striped hyena, silver-backed jackal and ducks. Other attractions are the preserved wildlife fossils which include the Giant Tortoise and the 18-20 ft long Crocodile.
