Kenya is both public and private universities. Most public universities have constituent colleges. The private universities are of three categories;
- Chartered Universities
- Universities authorized to operate with Letters of Interim Authority (LIA)
- Universities which had been offering degrees long before the establishment of the Commission for Higher Education
