Strawberry

Strawberries are perennial herbaceous plants having edible fruits with seeds that are produced outside the fruit. The harvest time of strawberry is 6 to 10 months.  Strawberry plants also need a full sunlight and grow to 23 by 20 centimeters at around 350 grams per plant.

In Uganda strawberries are grown in Western parts of the country like in Kabale.

  • Strawberry plants grow best in a sheltered, sunny position.
  • They also grow well in well drained, weed free soil at a spacing of 45cm.
  • Spread out their roots and place them in the soil, positioning them so that the crown of the plant is just poking above the surface.
  • Water strawberries frequently throughout the growing season and weed regularly between rows.

Growing Strawberries in containers

  1. Strawberries are ideal for growing in hanging
  2. Water them regularly and feed them every 2 weeks with a high potassium plant fertilizer such as tomato food.
