The crop started being grown in the Eastern Region after 1930s. Groundnuts thrive under low rainfall and as a legume they improve soil fertility by fixing nitrogen into the soil.<\/p>\n<p>The country at the moment is producing over 300,000 tonnes of groundnuts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Varieties of Groundnuts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The varieties of groundnuts available in Uganda include the following:<br \/>\n\u2022 The Pale-Kernelled spreading type known under various local names (Itesot\/Amasoga)<br \/>\n\u2022 The Red Valencia type, but ranging from large seeded Manyema group e.g. Roxo to small seeded group e.g. Red Beauty<br \/>\n\u2022 The Indiana (Serenut 11 and Serenut lV) new varieties distributed by Socadido and NAADS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forms in which Groundnuts can be consumed<br \/>\n<\/strong>The groundnuts can be consumed in the following forms:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Groundnut is consumed Raw<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnuts can be Roasted<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnuts can Blanched<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnuts can be made into Peanut Butter<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnuts can be Crushed mixed with Traditional Dishes or cooked on its own as source<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits of Groundnuts<\/strong><br \/>\nThe benefits of groundnuts include the following:<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnuts are an excellent source of oil for Cooking.<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnut cake are commonly used as Animal Feed.<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnuts are largely grown by family farmers as Staple Food.<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnuts can be sold to Raise Income.<br \/>\n\u2022 Groundnuts provide a valuable source of Proteins, Energy, Fats and Minerals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Areas in Uganda that grow Groundnuts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Groundnuts can be grown in nearly all parts of Uganda but higher production levels are following districts:<br \/>\n\u2022 Tororo<br \/>\n\u2022 Soroti<br \/>\n\u2022 Kumi<br \/>\n\u2022 Kaberamido<br \/>\n\u2022 Amuria<br \/>\n\u2022 Bukedia<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenges faced by farmers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The challenges faced by the farmers include the following:<br \/>\n\u2022 Lack of improved varieties of seed as the improved varieties are very expensive<br \/>\n\u2022 Lack of capacity for disease control<br \/>\n\u2022 Limited storage facilities.<br \/>\n\u2022 Local farmers do not have capital buy procure the necessary tools and inputs<br \/>\n\u2022 Damage by Pest such as monkeys, squirrels, pigs , rats and birds<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Groundnut which was introduced into East Africa by Portuguese explorers in the 19th Century is the second most important legume after beans in Uganda.
