Key Drivers in the Education Sector

Key drivers which are shaping the Future the sector

The following key drivers are shaping the future of Uganda’s Education system;

• Quality of education at all levels is high and keeps improving. Education Standards Agency developed quality indicators, e.g. monitoring of learning attainment in lower primary, HIV/AIDS in schools, and health training institutions.
• Uganda has a low cost of student’s maintenance due to the lower cost of living in the  country.
• Excellent curricula and demand driven unique courses.
• Competitive and affordable tuition fees.
• English is used as a medium of instruction/teachings at all levels of the education system as opposed to the neighbouring countries in the region where two or more languages are used for instruction concurrently.
• High moral values inculcated at all levels of the education of system.
• Ugandans are very friendly people making acclimatization of foreign students very easy within a minimum time period.
• Ugandan teachers/instructors are already involved with number of institutions in the region, hence knowledgeable of the training needs of the region.

The Potential  demand  for education
The population of people below the ages of 25, according to World Bank 2010 population statistics is  estimated as follows:

The table shows a total population of 11,488,000 males and 11,420,000 females in the age group of 0-24 years, which is the school going age as per Uganda’s current curriculum structure. These figures indicate that there is a huge demand for Education services.

HIGHER INSTITUTIONS ENROLMENT  in 2011
The government policy that encourages public private partnership in the education sector has led to an increase in the number of private higher learning institutions. The number of universities/tertiary institutions has increased and in addition more courses have been introduced leading to more students accessing higher education. The table below shows that 71.3 percent of the tertiary enrolment in 2011 was from universities. It further shows that more than half of those enrolled in the higher institutions in 2011 were males.
