It has a surface area of 5,300 sq km and a maximum length and width of 160 and 30 km respectively. It has a maximum depth of 51 meters. It is the seventh largest lake in Africa and therefore it is among the African Great Lakes. The lake is found in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift.
