{"id":1153,"date":"2013-04-13T17:13:57","date_gmt":"2013-04-13T17:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fortuneofafrica.com\/ug\/health-sector-profile\/"},"modified":"2013-04-13T17:13:57","modified_gmt":"2013-04-13T17:13:57","slug":"health-sector-profile","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/afrifacto.com\/ug\/health-sector-profile\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Sector Profile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The key players in the provision of health services\u00a0\u00a0 include government, private sector , not for profit organisations, private health practitioners, traditional and complementary medical practitioners and the informal sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Characteristics of the sector<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uganda has scored a lot of success in the fight against HIV\/AIDS<\/li>\n<li>The population\u2019s ability to purchase medicines and health supplies has generally improved over the recent past.<\/li>\n<li>In Uganda, medicines are supplied through both the public and the private sectors<\/li>\n<li>The health status indices of Uganda are still very low<\/li>\n<li>Effective management of the healthcare sector is still lacking resulting in the misuse of the resources allocated to the sector by government.<\/li>\n<li>Uganda\u2019s doctor-to-patient ratio is low<\/li>\n<li>The sector is suffering from inadequate funding for the development of the infrastructure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Health infrastructure in Uganda<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A network of properly functioning health facilities is not yet attained.<\/li>\n<li>The government hospital lack capacity to maintain the medical equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Geographical access to health services<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The national average for the percentage of people living within 5 kilometres radius to a health facility is estimated to be 57%<\/li>\n<li>There are variations with access ranging from as low as 7% of the population within 5 kilometres of a health facility in Kotido to 100% in Jinja, Tororo and Kampala districts.<\/li>\n<li>Rural communities are particularly affected mainly because health facilities are mostly located in towns along main roads.<\/li>\n<li>Private health facilities to date are mainly more concentrated in urban centres than in the rural locales.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The key players in the provision of health services\u00a0\u00a0 include government, private sector , not for profit organisations, private health practitioners, traditional and complementary medical practitioners and the informal sector.
