Location<\/strong><\/p>\n

Khartoum is the capital and second largest city of the Republic of Sudan. It is located in central Sudan at the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile rivers. The main Nile continues to flow north towards Egypt and finally into the Mediterranean Sea. Khartoum lies near the rich, irrigated cotton-growing Gezira area to the south and much of its trade is based on Nile river traffic.<\/p>\n

History of<\/strong> Khartoum<\/strong><\/p>\n

Khartoum was first established as a military outpost in 1821 by Muhammad Ali, the ruler of Egypt. The nameKhartoum is said to come from the shape of the meeting point of the White and the Blue Nile that resembles the trunk of an elephant (khurtum). Between 1825 and 1880, it grew rapidly due to slave trade.\u00a0 In 1885, the Mahdists destroyed Khartoum killing Major General Charles George Gordon, the then British governor-general of Sudan.\u00a0Governor-General Lord Kitchener then occupied Khartoum in 1898. He rebuilt and redesigned Khartoum serving at the seat of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan government. In 1956, Khartoum became the capital of the independent Republic of Sudan.<\/p>\n

Khartoum is 22,122 km\u00b2 and it has a population of 5.021 million people.<\/p>\n
