{"id":877,"date":"2013-07-07T16:01:39","date_gmt":"2013-07-07T16:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fortuneofafrica.com\/ss\/?page_id=59"},"modified":"2013-07-07T16:01:39","modified_gmt":"2013-07-07T16:01:39","slug":"health-sector-profile-of-south-sudan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/afrifacto.com\/southsudan\/health-sector-profile-of-south-sudan\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Sector Profile of South Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The health sector of South Sudan is undergoing improvements and the key players in the provision of health services\u00a0are non government organizations including World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Characteristics of the sector<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>South Sudan\u2019s doctor-to-patient ratio is low<\/li>\n<li>The health status indices are still very low<\/li>\n<li>Effective management of the healthcare sector is still lacking resulting from adequate competent human resources.<\/li>\n<li>The sector is suffering from inadequate funding for the development of the infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>Health services delivery in South Sudan is structured along the following four tiers; Primary Health Care Units (PHCUs), Primary Health Care Centres (PHCCs), County Hospitals (CH) and State Hospitals (SH) \/ Teaching Hospitals (THs).<\/li>\n<li>There are 51 hospitals i.e.3 Teaching Hospitals, 7 State Hospitals, 14 Specialised Hospitals, and 27 County Hospitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Geographical access to health services<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is poor accessibility to health centers due to poor roads<\/li>\n<li>Rural communities are particularly affected mainly because health facilities are mostly located in towns along main roads.<\/li>\n<li>Private health facilities are mainly concentrated in urban centers than in the rural areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inaccessibility of medical care and health services due to geographical, institutional, socio-cultural and financial barriers<\/li>\n<li>Ineffective referral mechanism between all levels of service delivery due to inadequate communication and transport and weak linkages between the different levels of service delivery<\/li>\n<li>Poor quality of health services, including the processes of delivery, like lack of privacy, confidentiality and poor patient-provider interactions<\/li>\n<li>Lack of health communication and promotion strategy<\/li>\n<li>In adequate human resource, limited competence and insufficient skill mix of the available ones, which compromises provision of quality, basic and lifesaving health services<\/li>\n<li>High staff turnover and no clear retention plan<\/li>\n<li>Limited capacity of health training institutions i.e. training only nurses, midwives, lab tech and community health workers<\/li>\n<li>Inadequate number of and dilapidated health infrastructure at all levels<\/li>\n<li>Weak health management information system<\/li>\n<li>No standardized reporting form for tracking data between health facilities, NGOs or vertical programmes<\/li>\n<li>Poor health commodities security i.epharmaceuticals and equipment<\/li>\n<li>Irregularly distributed pre-packed kits supplied in a \u201cpushed-based\u201d supply system<\/li>\n<li>Inadequate and poorly managed pharmaceutical storage capacity and network across the country<\/li>\n<li>Uncoordinated drug donations and parallel supply chain system<\/li>\n<li>Inadequate national quality control and reference laboratory services<\/li>\n<li>Very low and progressively declining public sector health budget and difficulties in accessing the approved budget<\/li>\n<li>Insufficient health insurance system<\/li>\n<li>Over reliance on oil as the main source of revenue for the government health financing.<\/li>\n<li>Limited legislative and regulatory capacity<\/li>\n<li>Limitations in articulating the roles of public, private and civil society in delivery of health care, resulting in limited engagement of all these sectors<\/li>\n<li>Lack of statutory norms and standards for service delivery<\/li>\n<li>Unstructured coordination mechanisms among health sector partners<\/li>\n<li>Insufficient planning and organisational capacity<\/li>\n<li>Lack of accountability and transparency between stakeholders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The health sector of South Sudan is undergoing improvements and the key players in the provision of health services\u00a0are non government organizations including World Health Organization.
